At the beginning of 2020, we initiated a major project and soon received additional support from Acronis; so together we are building a school in the Dominican Republic. Despite Corona, we have made great progress in the past months. The first school camp took place at the end of the year.
Playing, learning, children laughing; 14 girls from the neighbouring communities filled the school grounds with life at the end of December. The Mariposa Foundation organised a two week camp each side of Christmas 2020 for girls aged between seven and twelve. The crowds were huge and the girls were eager to get to work every day. They played, they painted, they learned together with Denice and Erika; two young trainee teachers from the community. The Foundation used the opportunity directly to give them educational training and prepare them for their coming tasks as teachers.
Another positive development is the, albeit unfinished, school will open for a few days to offer an "open school centre" for the local communities. These open days will utilise the remaining materials from the December camp. This allows the pandenic delayed school to show its value and gain even more recognition before the official opening.
In the meantime, construction work is proceeding under increased Corona protection measures. New materials have been ordered, the workmen are erecting walls, working on the toilets and the school kitchen. We look forward to when the school can start its regular operations!
